BREAKFAST SESSION
LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WASTE ON BAD RESEARCH

PRINT SESSION OUTLINE FOR CPD

A hands-on breakfast workshop for nurses who want to apply evidence to their practice but don’t know where to start.

Modern healthcare demands that nurses apply evidence in their everyday clinical practice. This requirement is incorporated throughout the 2015 iteration of the ACCCN Practice standards. Specifically, Standard 12 states that critical care nurses should ‘Engage(s) in and contributes to evidence-based critical care nursing practice’. Many nurses often feel over-whelmed with the task of applying research evidence because: 1) there can be a large volume of research to review; and 2) deciding which studies are worthy of implementation into their practice.

This workshop has been designed to provide time-poor clinicians with the skills to effectively sort papers into discard and review piles. Key outcomes include

  • Ability to identify the key quality components of sample and data collection across both quantitative and qualitative studies
  • Apply a review strategy that will quickly process papers.

The workshop facilitators are Dr Kaye Rolls and Dr Naomi Hammond. Both Naomi and Kaye have extensive experience in undertaking research and translating new research evidence into clinical practice.
DR. KAYE ROLLS
Over the last 30 years Kaye has worked in the speciality of intensive care in a number of roles including senior clinician, educator, clinical manager and clinical nurse consultant. Between 2004 and 2016 she was the clinical nurse consultant (knowledge management) and clinical project officer for the Intensive Care Coordination and Monitoring Unit (ICCMU), now part of the Agency for Clinical Innovation. During this time, she has coordinated the development of state-wide guidelines across core critical care practices and implemented a tracheostomy guideline across acute care facilities in NSW. In addition to this she managed the ICCMU website and moderated the largest virtual community for intensive care clinicians in Australia, ICUConnect. Kaye has taught both undergraduate and post graduate units at Sydney Nursing School and University Technology Sydney. Kaye also collaborates with AVATAR, a research group based at Griffith University, Queensland, on knowledge brokerage and research translation. Kaye’s research interests include essential patient care (infection prevention and oral care), knowledge translation, vascular access, social media and guideline development.

Kaye is also presenting in concurrent session 7 on 'Dressing and line changes - 4 or 7 days? Which one is it?'
DR. NAOMI HAMMOND
Dr Naomi Hammond is an intensive care clinical researcher with a strong academic record that includes over 50 publications, numerous scholarships and awards, and research funding totalling over 6 Million Australian Dollars.
